How the 2026 Transition Season works
The 2026 Transition Season splits the twenty Super League clubs into two streams of ten, Stream A and Stream B, based on odd and even finishing positions in the 2025/26 league. Each club plays eighteen matches inside its own stream, and the two stream winners meet in a championship match on 31 January 2027.
The winner of that match takes Zambia’s CAF Champions League place, subject to CAF rules and club licensing. Final Transition Season standings also decide which clubs enter the 2027 ABSA Cup. League matches began on the weekend of 3 and 4 October 2026; our report on when the Zambia Premier League starts explains why the opening round moved from September.
The new March to November calendar from 2027
From 2027 the Zambia Super League runs from March to November instead of August to May. The FAZ Council approved the change in May 2026, because many fixtures fell in the rainy season, with poor pitches and postponements. The same meeting approved expanding the Super League from 18 clubs to 20.
Zambia Super League champions since 2018
Power Dynamos and Red Arrows have shared the title since 2021/22, with Power Dynamos winning the last two seasons. ZESCO United won three of the four titles before that.
