Konkola Blades ended Nkana’s three-match winning streak with a clinical 2-0 win on Sunday to move level on points with the 13-time champions in Stream A, as Stream B leaders Green Eagles watched their closest rivals close in during matchweek 5 of the MTN Super League transitional season.
At Konkola Stadium, Emmanuel Kunda broke the deadlock in the 34th minute before Congolese striker Idris Ilunga Mbombo doubled the lead three minutes after the restart to secure a statement victory.
The result halts Nkana’s momentum in its tracks. After winning three on the bounce, Kalampa were second-best in Chililabombwe. The defeat leaves them second in Stream A on 9 points from four games, level with Blades, who leapfrog into third on goal difference, but now a point adrift of new leaders FC MUZA.
FC MUZA, who beat Power Dynamos 1-0 on Saturday through Solomon Mpasela’s strike, sit top of Stream A with 10 points from four matches, holding a slender advantage in the race for the final playoff spot.
Buffaloes win in Kabwe
In Stream B, Green Buffaloes and Chirundu United both claimed crucial away victories to keep the pressure on leaders Green Eagles.
Green Buffaloes came from a quiet first half to beat Kabwe Warriors 2-1. Paul Mbuyi rose highest to head Buffaloes ahead in the 65th minute before Golden Mashata doubled the lead nine minutes later with an exquisite chip.
Charles Majapa pulled one back for Warriors late on with a stunning direct free-kick, but it was no more than a consolation. The win lifts Buffaloes to second in Stream B on 8 points, 2 points behind Green Eagles, who were held 0-0 by Nkwazi on Saturday and remain top with 10 points.
Chirundu make it two in a row
Chirundu United continued their fairytale start. Andrew Simumba’s well-struck 27th-minute free-kick was enough to see off Mufulira Wanderers 1-0 in Mufulira, their second consecutive victory.
That result moves Chirundu to third in Stream B on 7 points from four games, firmly in the playoff conversation, while Mufulira Wanderers’ struggles continue. Mighty remain on 2 points, with Mutondo Stars still rooted to the bottom without a point.
The transitional season, split into two streams with only the top team from each stream advancing to the final playoff, is leaving no room for error.
