Zanaco FC strengthened their challenge for a place in the MTN Super League Transitional Season Final Playoff with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Trident FC, while leaders FC MUZA and Green Eagles maintained their positions at the top of their respective streams after being held to goalless draws on Saturday.
Araina Lambert scored twice as Zanaco claimed the only victory across six fixtures, in a weekend dominated by defensive displays and missed opportunities.
The Bankers’ victory in Solwezi lifts them to second place in Stream A on 10 points from five matches, one behind leaders FC MUZA and level with third-placed Nkana FC.
Konkola Blades, who occupy fourth position on nine points with a game in hand, are also firmly in contention as the battle for the stream’s sole Final Playoff place gathers momentum.
Lambert double for the Bankers
Lambert set Zanaco on their way in the 15th minute with a well-taken finish after being set up by Mwenya Mwape. Kiala Wa Kiala doubled the advantage six minutes later following a defensive mix-up between the Trident goalkeeper and his backline.
Lambert struck again four minutes after the restart to give Zanaco a commanding 3-0 lead.
However, Trident threatened to spoil the Bankers’ afternoon through an impressive late response. In-form striker Sam Sikasote pulled one back with a header in the 62nd minute before completing his brace in the 85th minute to set up a tense finish.
Lazarus Chengo had also come close with a free kick as Trident pushed for an equaliser, but Zanaco held on to secure three important points.
The result provides a timely boost for the Bankers, who are looking to maintain pressure on the teams above them as the transitional campaign approaches its decisive stages.
MUZA stay top as Kitwe derby ends goalless
At the top of Stream A, FC MUZA retained their advantage after being held to a 0-0 draw by Nchanga Rangers. The Mazabuka-based side move to 11 points from five matches, maintaining a one-point cushion over the chasing pack.
Their defensive organisation has been a major strength, with only two goals conceded in five outings.
The much-anticipated Kitwe derby between Power Dynamos and Nkana FC also ended 0-0 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. The stalemate leaves Nkana third on 10 points from five matches, level with Zanaco but behind on goal difference.
Kalampa have now gone two matches without a victory or a goal after their three-match winning run was ended by Konkola Blades last weekend.
Power Dynamos remain fifth on seven points, having managed just four goals in five matches.
In the other Stream A fixture, Kansanshi Dynamos twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against NAPSA Stars at Solwezi Independence Stadium.
Nicolas Chisempele gave NAPSA an early lead in the 10th minute, but Bebby Musangala equalised in the 39th minute following good work from Clinton Lubula and Mathews Tolopa. Godfrey Binga restored NAPSA’s advantage two minutes after the restart with a header from a corner.
However, Joseph Ssemujju salvaged a point for Kansanshi in the 89th minute, converting from the penalty spot after being fouled by Christopher Bwalya.
Kansanshi move to fifth on five points, while NAPSA remain eighth on four points after recording their fourth draw of the campaign.
Green Eagles remain in control of Stream B
Stream B also produced three goalless draws, with Green Eagles maintaining their position at the summit despite being held by Kabwe Warriors. The Choma-based side remain top on 11 points from five matches, having scored six goals and conceded just once.
ZESCO United occupy second place on nine points after drawing with Nkwazi FC, although they have played six matches, one more than the leaders.
Red Arrows and Chirundu United also shared the points following a goalless encounter. The result extends Chirundu’s unbeaten run to three matches in their debut Super League campaign, leaving them fourth on eight points from five outings.
They are level on points with Green Buffaloes, who did not feature on Saturday.
Relegation places and the playoff race
At the bottom of Stream B, Mufulira Wanderers and Mutondo Stars remain in the relegation positions on two and zero points respectively. Nchanga Rangers and Makeni All Stars occupy the bottom two places in Stream A.
With only the winners of the two streams advancing to the Final Playoff, the battle for qualification remains finely poised.
Zanaco’s victory may prove particularly significant, with Lambert’s goals ensuring the Bankers remain within touching distance of the Stream A summit, while FC MUZA and Green Eagles continue to set the pace.
