ZESCO United moved into second place in Stream B of the MTN Super League Transitional Season after a commanding 4-0 victory over Roan United in a rescheduled week 3 fixture at Kafubu Stadium in Luanshya.
A brace from Kennedy Musonda, alongside goals from Anthony Shipanuka and Yves Allarabaye, secured all three points for the Ndola-based side and their first away win of the campaign.
Roan hit the crossbar early
Roan, playing in front of their home supporters, made a promising start and nearly took the lead in the 12th minute. Striker Clifford Hamunkoyo beat two defenders before unleashing a shot that struck the crossbar, allowing ZESCO to escape unscathed.
The visitors gradually took control and broke the deadlock in the 28th minute through Musonda, who reacted quickest after Roan goalkeeper Bweupe Anatole parried Allan Mumba’s long-range effort into his path. The striker kept his composure to slot home from close range.
Musonda doubled ZESCO’s advantage just before half-time after being brought down inside the penalty area in the 41st minute. Referee Leonard Akapelwa pointed to the spot, and the forward duly converted to register his fourth goal of the season in five appearances.
ZESCO pull clear after the break
ZESCO continued to dominate after the restart and extended their lead in the 54th minute. Musonda turned provider, setting up Shipanuka to finish and leave the hosts facing an uphill task.
With his side comfortably in control, coach Mwenya Chipepo introduced Gilbert Tentani, Allarabaye and Kelvin Kampamba as ZESCO looked to maintain their momentum.
The changes paid off when Kampamba combined with fellow substitute Allarabaye to create the opportunity for the latter to score ZESCO’s fourth goal, completing an emphatic afternoon for the visitors.
Second place in Stream B
The victory lifts ZESCO to second in Stream B with eight points, two behind leaders Green Eagles.
The result also underlines their attacking resurgence, with Chipepo’s side scoring nine goals across their last two matches following their 5-0 demolition of Mutondo Stars at the weekend.
