Zimbabwe’s 2026/27 domestic cricket season gets underway this Friday, with the country’s newest sporting landmark, the Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls, poised to host competitive cricket for the very first time next month.
The campaign launches with Pro50 Championship holders Southern Rocks beginning their title defence against Eagles at Masvingo Sports Club, while Mountaineers host Tuskers at Mutare Sports Club. But the most significant date on the calendar is 20 November, when Rocks face Tuskers at Mosi-oa-Tunya in the first-ever cricket match at the venue.
A multi-purpose venue near the falls
The 10,000-seater facility has been designed as a multi-purpose complex capable of hosting rugby and hockey alongside cricket. It will feature a playing field, practice nets, scoreboards, a grandstand, hospitality facilities, floodlights and a broadcast and media centre.
The venue’s location, near one of the world’s most famous natural wonders, the Victoria Falls, is central to its appeal. Zimbabwe Cricket has been explicit about targeting the tourist market.
A test run for the World Cup
The domestic fixtures at Mosi-oa-Tunya will serve as an initial test run for the venue as work continues towards its targeted completion ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2027. Zimbabwe will co-host that tournament with South Africa and Namibia, and Victoria Falls has been confirmed as one of 12 venues for the 14-team event.
Zimbabwe will stage first-round matches across three venues, Harare Sports Club, Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo and Mosi-oa-Tunya.
