Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC saw their CAF Champions League ambitions shattered on Friday, surrendering a 2-0 first-leg lead to lose 3-0 to Petro de Luanda in Angola and crash out 3-2 on aggregate.
Scottland arrived in Luanda with one foot in the group stage after a 2-0 victory in the first leg in Harare. But Petro, reeling from that defeat, produced a ruthless second-leg response to overturn the tie.
The Angolans scored three unanswered goals to complete the comeback and send Scottland out of the competition. It is a bitter blow for Norman Mapeza’s side, who had targeted a place in the group stage.
The domestic picture
The defeat leaves Scottland with two clear priorities: defending their Castle Lager Premiership crown and chasing the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup.
Hardrock lead the league standings with 66 points from 31 matches, while Scottland sit on 61 from 30. The champions hold a game in hand, but with Hardrock in firm control of their own destiny, there is little margin for error. Winning all four remaining league matches would take Scottland to 73 points.
Their next assignment is a midweek encounter against CAPS United at Rufaro Stadium on Thursday, 29 October.
Cup glory still on the table
Silverware remains a live prospect in the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup. Scottland have already booked their place in the semi-finals after beating Bulawayo Chiefs on penalties in the quarter-finals. They will face Herentals, who eliminated Hardrock, also on penalties, in the last eight.
After a continental campaign that promised so much and delivered heartbreak, Mapeza’s men now have a chance to salvage their season on two fronts, starting with the league match on Thursday.
