The Stormers have signed Sharks lock Corné Rahl, who will join them in July 2027 at the end of the current season.
Rahl is 24, stands 2.03 metres and weighs 122 kilograms. He plays for the Sharks until the season ends. He is from Montagu in the Western Cape and went to school at Oakdale, a year ahead of his future teammate Paul de Villiers.
Why the Stormers went for a lock
Salmaan Moerat and Ruben van Heerden both moved to France at the end of last season. Director of rugby John Dobson said the club wanted to invest in a player with long-term potential, and described Rahl as a player who has shown he can stand up to the best in the game.
Rahl said he is focused on performing for his current team before he makes the move to Cape Town next year.
The Bulls take a Stormers prop on loan
The Stormers have also lent out a front rower. Hencus van Wyk, a 34-year-old prop, has joined the Bulls on loan while Mornay Smith and Mawande Mdanda are injured. Johan Ackermann, who coaches the Bulls, said the loan would last a couple of months.
Both moves are the kind that show up in the transfer pages rather than on a scoreboard, and both are worth knowing for anyone following South African sport week to week.
