Tanzania’s National Athletics Championships brought more than 300 athletes to Pwani as the country searches for its next generation of stars.
The two day championships took place at the Filbert Bayi Grounds in Kibaha, drawing competitors from all 31 regions of mainland Tanzania as well as Zanzibar. Events ran across sprints, middle and long distance races, jumps and throws, giving selectors a broad look at the emerging talent pool.
The timing carries weight. The championships help identify athletes for regional and global competition, and they offer coaches a clear view of fitness and consistency. With so many regions taking part, the event has become one of the most important dates on the domestic calendar.
Officials used the platform to push for higher standards. The government urged athletes to stop measuring themselves against local rivals alone and to start targeting international records, a call meant to lift Tanzania’s competitiveness on the world stage. The message reflects growing ambition after recent success in distance running.
That ambition has a face. Marathon world champion Alphonce Simbu has shown Tanzanian athletes what is possible at the very top, and his rise gives younger competitors a clear benchmark to chase as they move up the ranks.

The next step is turning promise into results abroad. If the pipeline holds, Tanzania could see more of its athletes competing for honours far beyond home soil.
