Mamelodi Sundowns begin the 2026/27 Betway Premiership as favourites to win the title back. Orlando Pirates go in as defending champions, and a rebuilt Kaizer Chiefs under new coach Fernando Da Cruz are the next best fancied, setting up a three way fight at the top.
Sundowns remain the benchmark. Their squad depth and continental pedigree make them the side everyone measures themselves against, and anything short of the title tends to count as a disappointment in Tshwane.
Pirates will argue that champions deserve respect. They kept their core together and start with belief, while Chiefs have spent heavily to close the gap and give Da Cruz a squad capable of challenging rather than chasing.
The Soweto derby will, as ever, shape the mood of the season. Local internationals carry these teams, and a strong league campaign is the surest route back into the CAF Champions League.
