The 2026/27 Betway Premiership is under way. South Africa’s top flight returned on the weekend of 1 August, and Kaizer Chiefs made the perfect start, beating newly promoted Kruger United 3-1 at Mbombela Stadium in the first league game of Fernando Da Cruz’s reign.
Chiefs supporters had waited a long time for an opening day like this. The new coach set his side up to press high and move the ball quickly, and three goals on the road settled early nerves after a summer of change at Naturena.
Champions Orlando Pirates began the defence of their title at home to fellow newcomers Milford FC, while Mamelodi Sundowns, the bookmakers’ favourites for another crown, eased into the campaign. Two promoted clubs, Kruger United and Milford, are getting their first taste of life among the big names.

The league runs through to next year, and with Sundowns, Pirates and a revamped Chiefs all in the mix, the title race already looks compelling.
