Taking cash out of M-PESA at an agent is charged on a published band tariff that runs from KSh 11 to a maximum of KSh 309, so what a withdrawal costs a Kenyan bettor depends on which band it lands in rather than on how much is taken out within that band.
The agent ladder, band by band
Safaricom publishes the ladder on its own rates page. The charge is KSh 11 on 50 to 100 and KSh 29 across the bands from 101 to 2,500. Above that it is KSh 52 on 2,501 to 3,500, KSh 69 on 3,501 to 5,000, KSh 87 on 5,001 to 7,500 and KSh 115 on 7,501 to 10,000.
The ladder keeps climbing after that: KSh 167 on 10,001 to 15,000, KSh 185 on 15,001 to 20,000, KSh 197 on 20,001 to 35,000 and KSh 278 on 35,001 to 50,000. The maximum is KSh 309, which applies from 50,001 to 250,000. The table begins at 50 and shows no charge below it.
Sending and depositing
Sending money to another registered M-PESA user is free from 1 to 100, starts at KSh 7 on 101 to 500 and does not rise above KSh 108 at the top of that table. Depositing cash into M-PESA is free.
Putting cash into the wallet therefore costs nothing, and the charge appears at the other end, when the wallet is emptied at an agent.
What else comes off
A Kenyan bettor also meets deductions that are not on the Safaricom tariff. Kenyan betting is taxed on the way in and on the way out, and how betting tax works in Kenya sets out which deduction happens at which point. What to check about payouts before choosing a site covers the operator side of the same question, and the rest of our Kenya sports news is collected on AXN Sports.
