The Kenya Morans are turning their focus to the next FIBA AfroBasket qualifying cycle as the Kenya Basketball Federation plots a return to the continental stage. After missing out on the 2025 finals, the national men’s side is rebuilding with one eye on the qualifiers ahead. Basketball remains one of Kenya’s fastest growing team sports, and expectations are rising.
Coach Cliff Owuor remains central to the project, and the federation wants a settled pool of players who can commit to the travel and short windows that define African qualifying. Kenya’s near miss last time, decided by fine margins against stronger groups, showed both the promise and the gaps in the squad. Logistics have hurt Kenya before, including a forfeited fixture when flights fell through.
Experienced heads still matter. Forward Tylor Ongwae, a familiar name in Kenyan basketball, brings scoring and leadership when available, while the federation continues to track diaspora players eligible for the Morans. Blending local league talent with players based abroad is the balance Owuor must strike. Continuity in selection would help the group build real understanding.
Off the court, the domestic game feeds the national picture. A stronger Kenya Basketball Federation league raises standards and gives selectors more options at home. Youth development in Nairobi and beyond is also part of the long term plan. Fans want to see the Morans back among Africa’s contenders, and the coming qualifying window will show how much progress has been made.
Where to bet: Kenyan fans can back the Morans and wider basketball markets at licensed local bookmakers such as Betika and SportPesa, with odds in KES. Compare match winner and points handicap prices, and check the rules before staking. 18+. Gamble responsibly.
