The Cape Town Tigers are setting their sights on a return to the Basketball Africa League after sitting out the 2026 season. South Africa’s most prominent club side wants to reclaim its place among the continent’s elite through the Road to BAL qualifiers. Missing a season stings, but the club is treating it as a reset.
The Tigers have history in this competition. Built on the back of a Basketball National League title, they once went undefeated through a Road to BAL group and reached the main event for three straight seasons. That pedigree gives the squad belief that another qualifying run is within reach. Coaching continuity has been a strength during those qualifying campaigns.
Getting back is not simple. The qualifiers throw South African clubs against strong opposition from across the region, and the Tigers will need depth, fitness and a settled rotation. Familiar figures around the club, including long serving players and management, understand what the marathon demands. Home court advantage, if secured, could ease the path.
For South African basketball, a competitive Cape Town side lifts the whole scene. BAL exposure raises the profile of local players and gives young talent something to aim for. Sponsors and fans alike want the Tigers roaring again. Supporters in Cape Town will hope the club can rebuild momentum and book another trip to Africa’s premier league.
Where to bet: South African fans can follow the Tigers and BAL action at licensed local bookmakers such as Betway and Hollywoodbets, with prices in ZAR. Compare match winner and handicap markets, and always read the terms before you stake. 18+. Gamble responsibly.
