Zambia beat Comoros by three goals to nil in Matola on 21 September, a second win from two that made them the first side through to the semi finals of the COSAFA qualifier for the Under 20 Africa Cup of Nations. They went on to finish Group C with three wins from three.
Tumalo Mununga scored in the fifth minute and Abel Nyirongo added the second in the seventeenth. Kayula Chinunda made it three shortly after the hour.
Perry Mutapa’s side had opened the tournament on 18 September by beating Malawi by two goals to nil, Billy Daka scoring both. They closed the group by beating Botswana by three goals to one, with Daniel Silubonde scoring from the penalty spot in the ninth minute, and finished on nine points with eight goals scored and one conceded.
A group settled with a game to spare
Group C also contains Malawi and Botswana, and Malawi beat Botswana by three goals to nil on the same day that Zambia beat Comoros. That left Malawi as the only side who could still reach six points, and Zambia had already beaten them in the opening fixture, so the Comoros result guaranteed Zambia top spot with a match still to play.
COSAFA named Zambia the first side to book a semi final place. Group winners and the best placed runner up advance, and Zambia meet South Africa in the last four at the Associação Black Bulls ground in Matola on 25 September.
What the tournament is for
The competition is the COSAFA qualifier for the 2027 Under 20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, played in Mozambique from 18 to 27 September with twelve nations entered. Only the two finalists go to Ghana, so the qualifier is the whole of the region’s route there.
Zambia arrive as the most successful country in the tournament’s history. A junior side that wins all three of its group matches is also an early signal about the next Chipolopolo squad.
Where to bet: Youth tournaments are priced in kwacha by Betway and Premierbet, both licensed by the Gaming Regulatory Board, usually on match result and over and under only, with deposits through MTN, Airtel and Zamtel money. Under 20 markets are priced off very little data, so the two books can be far apart on the same fixture and both can be wrong. Compare them before you stake, and treat the outright as the thinnest market of the lot.
