Zambia beat Côte d’Ivoire by eight kicks to seven from the penalty mark in Libreville on 12 February 2012 to win the Africa Cup of Nations, after the final finished goalless.
The final was played in Libreville, in Gabon. No goal was scored in one hundred and twenty minutes, so the title went to kicks from the penalty mark. Didier Drogba had put an Ivorian penalty over the bar in the second half.
How the kicks went
Kennedy Mweene saved from Kolo Touré. The kicks went on and Gervinho put his wide. Stoppila Sunzu then scored, eight to seven.
Libreville and 1993
The match was played near the site of the 1993 air crash off the coast of Gabon in which a generation of Zambian players died.
Zambia had not won the Africa Cup of Nations before 2012.
