The Nation reported the extension on 27 August and 247Malawi carried the signing on 22 August. Both put Kumwenda back at the Waves for 2027, and 247Malawi reports the agreement runs for a year with an option to extend it depending on how she plays.

A signing that lands in the Australian window

Australian clubs do most of their contracting in August, and this deal arrives inside that window. Peninsula Waves, quoted by The Nation, described Kumwenda as the side’s most reliable finisher through the 2026 season. For a Malawian shooter who has built almost all of her career abroad, another year in Victoria means another year of competitive minutes between national team assignments.

Nairobi decides Malawi’s World Cup place

The Africa Netball Cup runs from 19 to 26 September at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi, and it is Africa’s qualifying route to the Netball World Cup in Sydney in 2027. Ten women’s teams are entered: Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, Nigeria and Tanzania.

South Africa and Uganda have already taken African places through the world rankings, so the two remaining African berths go to the next two highest placed eligible nations in Nairobi. That makes September the month that settles whether the Queens are in Sydney, which is why the form of a shooter like Kumwenda matters now rather than next year. AXN Sports will carry the Nairobi results when they land.

Where to bet: netball markets in Malawi are seasonal, so expect match winner and winning margin prices rather than a deep menu once the Africa Netball Cup starts. Premier Bet and Betway price Queens fixtures in kwacha with deposits by mobile money, and the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority is the body that licenses betting in the country. Prices on a continental tournament move once squads are named, so the number you see in early September is rarely the number at tip off. Compare the two books before you stake. Our guide to the best betting sites in Malawi covers licensing and withdrawal times, and there is more in Malawi netball news. 18+. Gamble responsibly.
