The Nigeria Basketball Federation set it out in a communiqué on 21 August, issued by the federation vice president and league chairman Babatunde Ogunade and the secretary general Amina Amanchi. The playoffs had been pencilled in for an earlier window and have been moved, so the new dates are the ones to work from.

A fourth year in Rivers State

This is the fourth consecutive year Port Harcourt has hosted the playoffs, which by Nigerian league standards is unusual continuity. Domestic basketball here has spent most of the past decade moving venues, losing seasons and restarting, so a single city holding the showpiece four years running says something about where the infrastructure and the local appetite actually are.

Eight teams have qualified for it. The playoffs decide the national champion, which is the part of a Nigerian basketball season that carries beyond September.

What to watch for

A nine day window with eight teams means a compressed schedule, and in Nigerian basketball a compressed schedule tends to favour the deeper rosters rather than the better starting fives. Travel and rest do more damage than form over nine days in one hall.

There is also a calendar question behind it. Finishing in the first week of September leaves the federation a clear run at planning the 2027 season, which is not something Nigerian domestic basketball has often had.

Where to bet: domestic Nigerian basketball is priced thinly, so on the playoffs expect match winner and handicap rather than the player markets you get on the NBA. Bet9ja and SportyBet both take Nigerian bets and price basketball in naira. Lines on a compressed tournament move on availability rather than on form, so the price a day out is often not the price at tip off, and it is worth comparing the two books each round.
