Young Africans SC have parted ways with head coach Manqoba Mngqithi and fitness coach Chyna Mokaila following a 0-0 draw against TRA United in the NBC Premier League on Saturday 24 October.
The Tanzanian champions confirmed the termination of both contracts in a statement issued on Saturday, ending Mngqithi’s brief spell at the club after about three months in charge.
The decision came after Yanga lost 2-1 to arch-rivals Simba SC in the Kariakoo Derby on 10 October before dropping more points against TRA United, leaving them 5 points behind league leaders Simba.
Mngqithi leaves with silverware
Despite his departure, Mngqithi leaves with a Tanzanian Community Shield title and qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage.
The South African coach began his tenure with a 1-0 victory over Simba in the Community Shield in August. He also guided Yanga past Botswana’s Gaborone United before overseeing an emphatic 8-1 aggregate victory over Madagascar’s CFF Andoharanofotsy to secure continental qualification.
Across 13 competitive matches, Mngqithi recorded 10 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat.
Yanga begin search for new coach
Yanga’s management confirmed that preparations to appoint a new head coach had already begun and urged supporters to continue backing the team.
The timing followed the derby defeat and the goalless draw against TRA United, which increased the pressure on the defending champions in the domestic title race.
Mngqithi previously worked with Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows in South Africa. His departure leaves Yanga needing a new coach to lead their domestic campaign while preparing for the CAF Champions League group stage.
The club must now reorganise its technical bench as it seeks to regain momentum in the league and compete on the continental stage.
