Hardrock staged a remarkable comeback against FC Hunters before Highlanders edged CAPS United on penalties to set up a 28 November Chibuku Super Cup final at Chahwanda Stadium.
Hardrock and Highlanders will contest the Chibuku Super Cup final after overcoming FC Hunters and CAPS United respectively in two dramatic semi-final encounters over the weekend.
Hardrock stage comeback to eliminate Hunters
Hardrock became the first team to book their place in the final after recovering from a two-goal deficit to beat FC Hunters 5-3 on penalties following a 2-2 draw at Chahwanda Stadium on Saturday.
The Kwekwe-based side looked destined for elimination after going into the break trailing 2-0, with Godfrey Dabgwa and Delight Gandari putting Hunters in control.
Their task became even more difficult when Misheck Ngwenya was sent off in the 72nd minute after receiving a second yellow card.
However, the Kasongo Boys refused to surrender, with Prince Dube emerging as their hero. The forward pulled one back from the penalty spot before completing his brace in the 89th minute to force the match into a shootout.
Hardrock held their nerve from the spot, converting five penalties to secure a 5-3 shootout victory and keep their cup ambitions alive.
Sibanda and Muza inspire Bosso to the final
Highlanders completed the final line-up on Sunday after overcoming CAPS United 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Rufaro Stadium.
The Green Machine appeared to be heading for the final after Davison Marowa broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, putting CAPS United in front.
Highlanders, however, refused to give up and found their breakthrough eight minutes from time when substitute Reason Sibanda rose highest to head home Andrew Mbeba’s delivery from a free-kick.
With neither side able to find a winner in regulation time, the contest went to penalties.
Goalkeeper Reward Muza proved decisive for Bosso, saving efforts from Nyasha Gurende and Alleny Mukombedzi, while Obriel Chirinda sent his attempt over the crossbar.
Rainsome Pavari, Isaac Ngoma and Mongameli Tshuma converted their penalties to secure a 3-1 shootout victory and send Highlanders into their second Chibuku Super Cup final in seven years.
The victory keeps alive Bosso’s hopes of adding silverware to their centenary celebrations. They last won the competition in 2019.
Kaindu set for reunion with former paymasters
The final, scheduled for 28 November at Chahwanda Stadium, presents an intriguing encounter, particularly for Hardrock coach Kaindu, who will come up against his former club.
He knows the Bulawayo giants well, having previously been in charge of the club, and will now be hoping to mastermind Hardrock’s victory against his former paymasters and guide the Kwekwe side to cup glory.
The two teams have already exchanged league victories this season, adding another interesting dimension to the showdown.
Highlanders beat Hardrock 1-0 at Chahwanda Stadium, but the Kasongo Boys responded by defeating Bosso in the return fixture at Barbourfields Stadium.
Neither side can therefore claim a clear advantage from their league meetings, setting the stage for an intriguing cup final.
For Highlanders, the objective will be to end their season with a trophy during their historic centenary year. Hardrock, meanwhile, will be seeking to crown an impressive campaign with silverware on home turf.
