Shujaa and Kenya Morans both topped their pools at the Safari 7s and go into the Cup quarter-finals at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.
Shujaa opened the tournament on Friday with a 21-21 draw against SportPesa Fast Forward. They answered by beating Scotland 22-0, then took Pool A by beating Uganda 21-5. Gabriel Ayimba scored two tries in that last match, Glacious Owino added one and Aaron Tukei scored for Uganda. Elvis Olukusi set up one of Ayimba’s tries and Rayvone Ambale kicked a conversion.
The Morans came through the other way
Kenya Morans beat Gel Squad 7s 40-17 on Friday, beat Wonder 7s 40-12 on Saturday, and then drew 12-12 with Zimbabwe in their last pool match. That was enough for Pool C. Shogun took Pool B, beating the Wellington Jaguars 31-7 and the French Renegades 19-7.
How the tournament is laid out
The Kenya Rugby Union runs the Safari 7s and puts twelve men’s teams into three pools of four. It drew Shujaa with Uganda, SportPesa Fast Forward and Scotland in Pool A; Shogun with the French Renegades, Southern California and the Wellington Jaguars in Pool B; and Kenya Morans with Zimbabwe, Gel Squad 7s and Wonder 7s in Pool C. The twelve were confirmed in September.
Sunday’s quarter-finals
The eight sides left are Shujaa, Kenya Morans, Wonder 7s, SportPesa Fast Forward, the French Renegades, Zimbabwe, Shogun and the Wellington Jaguars. Shujaa play Wonder 7s, Kenya Morans play SportPesa Fast Forward, the French Renegades play Zimbabwe and Shogun play the Wellington Jaguars.
The tournament began on Friday 9 October and the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final are all played on Sunday 11 October at the same ground. Kevin Wambua is the Shujaa head coach.
