The Nigeria Premier Football League has fined Doma United ₦5.25 million and ordered the club to play their next three home games without fans, after security failures and supporter misconduct during their 1-1 draw with Kun Khalifat.
The trouble happened at the matchday 9 game at Pantami Stadium in Gombe on Saturday 17 October, and the league announced its sanctions on Monday 19 October. The NPFL said Doma United did not provide adequate security, which let unauthorised people into restricted areas.
Kun Khalifat coach Obinna Uzoho was injured in the incident.
Here is how the fine breaks down:
- ₦3 million for repeated failures to provide adequate security at home matches
- ₦1 million for hostile conduct by supporters towards match officials
- ₦1 million for gross misconduct towards an away team official after the match
- ₦250,000 as compensation for Uzoho’s medical treatment
The league also turned its attention to the match commissioner. It has recommended his demotion to a lower league over alleged neglect of duty, weak supervision and incomplete reporting of the match.
Doma United have been told to tighten security and educate their supporters on acceptable behaviour, and the NPFL has warned that further breaches could bring harsher punishment. The club had 48 hours from the date of the notice to appeal.
The punishment comes at an awkward time for Doma United. They are on 14 points, three behind leaders Rivers United and Rangers, and playing three home games in empty stands could take away some of their home advantage in a tight league.
