Malawi beat South Sudan by two goals to one at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on 25 September, opening their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations PAMOJA 2027 qualifying campaign with a home win.
Adepoju and Njaliwa score for the Flames
Babatunde Adepoju put Malawi ahead before the interval. Dhata levelled for South Sudan soon after the restart, and Lloyd Njaliwa restored the lead to settle it at two goals to one.
Kalisto Pasuwa is the Malawi coach. The match was Malawi’s opening fixture of the qualifying campaign for the 2027 finals, which Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda host.
Where Group B stands after matchday one
CAF lists Group B as Malawi, South Sudan, Egypt and Angola. Egypt and Angola drew without scoring in the group’s other opening match in Cairo.
CAF’s table after matchday one puts Malawi on three points, Angola and Egypt on one point each and South Sudan on nil. Malawi play Angola away on 6 October.
Three of the four sides in Group B are still on a point or none, so nothing in the group is settled after a round. Malawi have the points, and their next fixture takes them away to Luanda.
