Every licensed betting operator in Kenya has to give you a way to lock yourself out of your own account, and under the Gambling Control Act 2025 a family member can ask the regulator to do it for you.
Self exclusion shuts your betting account for a period you choose. Form 1 of the Gambling Control (Conduct of Gambling Operations) Regulations 2026 offers six months, one year, two years or an indefinite exclusion, and a person excluded indefinitely can only apply for a review after a minimum period set in the regulations. You apply, and every licensed operator must lock you out for the period you choose. It is the one tool in Kenyan gambling law that the player controls rather than the regulator or the operator.
Three ways an account gets closed
The first is your own request. The Act obliges licensed operators to run self exclusion mechanisms, alongside cooling off periods and clearer risk warnings, so this is not a favour a book chooses to offer.
The second is somebody else’s. A spouse, a parent, a guardian or another affected person can petition the Gambling Regulatory Authority with evidence that a gambler is being harmed, and ask for their access to licensed services to be restricted. It is the provision that makes this more than a personal setting buried in an account menu.
The third is the operator’s own. Books are expected to watch for patterns that point to harm and to act rather than wait to be asked.
What it does not do
Until every operator is connected to the Authority’s register, self exclusion arranged directly with one operator is not self exclusion from betting. Kenya licenses many operators, and shutting an account with one leaves the rest open, so a real break means repeating the request everywhere you hold an account.
It also does not reach an unlicensed site, because an operator with no Kenyan licence is under no Kenyan obligation. Checking that a book is licensed is therefore the first step rather than a technicality, and AXN Sports covers how to do that separately.
Those regulations were gazetted as Legal Notice 112 on 30 June 2026. They require the Authority to keep a register of excluded persons, accessible to every licensee through a secure electronic interface, and a person who wants to self exclude applies to the Authority in Form 1. A licensee has to block all gambling activity by a person on the register, refund deposits taken in breach of an exclusion within seven days and cancel any winnings, and existing licensees have six months from commencement to connect their systems to the register. The right to ask, and the operator’s duty to provide the tool, are already law.
Where to bet: Kenyan football is priced in shillings by licensed operators such as SportPesa and Betika, both regulated by the Gambling Regulatory Authority, which replaced the Betting Control and Licensing Board in 2025, and funded through M-Pesa and Airtel Money. The Act also restricts how those operators may advertise, barring celebrity and lifestyle promotion that glamorises gambling and advertising near learning institutions. Before you compare prices, check the operator holds a current Kenyan licence, because none of the protections here reach a site that does not.
