The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has sanctioned Warri Wolves following the assault on match officials after Sunday’s goalless draw against Kano Pillars in Ozoro.
The league charged the club with breaching its Framework and Rules in the NPFL matchday 10 fixture at the Southern Delta University Stadium. According to the NPFL, Warri Wolves failed to provide adequate security, allowing unauthorised persons into restricted areas, which led to the assault on an assistant referee outside the stadium.
The NPFL said a supporter of the club assaulted the appointed match officials after the match, leaving an assistant referee with a nose injury and bleeding.
Warri Wolves were fined ₦2 million for failing to provide adequate and effective security, and another ₦2 million for the assault on a match official. They must also pay ₦250,000 as compensation to the affected assistant referee for treatment of the injury.
The club will also have 3 points and 3 goals deducted from its accrued tally, and Warri Wolves will play their next three home matches behind closed doors.
The NPFL has also ordered the club to identify the person who carried out the assault and provide evidence of prosecution within seven days. The Seasiders have 48 hours from the date of the notice to appeal.
