Hardrock FC stand on the verge of writing one of Zimbabwean football’s most remarkable stories: a maiden Castle Lager Premiership title in their very first season after promotion, now just three matches from completion.
Kelvin Kaindu’s side lead the table by five points with three games to play, having seized control of the race with a dramatic late victory over Dynamos while defending champions Scottland were otherwise engaged.
They take on MWOS at Chahwanda Stadium on Sunday.
The Dynamos moment
The turning point came at Rufaro Stadium, where Hardrock edged Dynamos 1-0 courtesy of a late goal from veteran forward Masimba Mambare. The win stretched Hardrock’s advantage at the summit to five points.
Kaindu knows the pain of near-misses all too well. With Highlanders in 2012 and 2013, his sides finished level on points with Dynamos at the top, only to lose the title on goal difference on both occasions.
Tiger returns to the fortress
Sunday’s clash will be buoyed by the return of Eswatini international Neliswa ‘Tiger’ Dlamini.
Dlamini announced himself to the Zimbabwean football public with a 20-second strike against Kwekwe United in the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, and later scored in the league win over Bulawayo Chiefs at Chahwanda Stadium. His return for the run-in is a timely boost as Hardrock seek to close out the championship.
Scottland’s continental detour
While Hardrock focus on domestic matters, Scottland’s attention is elsewhere. The defending champions are in Angola for the second leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie against Petro de Luanda, carrying a 2-0 first-leg advantage. Because of that continental commitment, Scottland will not play their Matchday 32 league fixture until Thursday, 29 October, when they face CAPS United at Rufaro Stadium.
That means Hardrock can stretch their lead to eight points, albeit having played two more games, if they defeat MWOS on Sunday. The psychological advantage of piling pressure on the champions while they are preoccupied with continental football could prove decisive.
The MWOS test
MWOS will arrive at Chahwanda Stadium with nothing to lose and everything to prove. Lloyd Mutasa’s side beat Herentals 2-0 earlier this month. They also held the champions to a goalless draw at Rufaro on 1 August. The reverse fixture against Hardrock at Ngoni Stadium ended in a draw.
However, stopping a Hardrock side that has been trailblazing, with victories over Highlanders at Barbourfields and Dynamos at Rufaro, is a formidable assignment. Kaindu’s men appear to be peaking at precisely the right moment.
