From 1 November, Race Coast and 4Racing will run South African racing on the same set of procedures, and a saddle cloth number will mean the same thing at any racing centre in the country.
The racing operators have agreed a common set of procedures. Saddle cloth numbers will reflect the barrier draw at all racing centres, and fields will be listed in barrier order rather than from the top weight down.
What changes on the card
Barrier draws for minor races move from entry stage to final field stage. A reserve runner no longer takes a draw of its own, and instead inherits the barrier of the horse it replaces.
Race conditions, elimination procedures, the criteria for cancelling a race and the conditions for reducing stakes in a reduced field all become the same nationally. Supplementary entries for minor races extend to Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. Race categories revert to the traditional MR handicapping styling.
Stakes go up with it
Race Coast put its combined KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape stakes investment at R270 million, a rise of twenty per cent. 4Racing announced a further R22 million across the Eastern Cape and the Highveld.
Dean Sawarjith, the chief operations officer of Race Coast, put the case for the change in terms of simplifying how racing reads to the public.
What it means at the window
The saddle cloth change is the one a punter sees on the page. A number that matches the draw means the race card shows where each runner starts without the draw having to be looked up separately.
The reserve rule works the same way. A horse that comes into the field takes the barrier of the one it replaces, so the rest of the draw is unchanged by a late scratching.
