Kenya beat Uganda by 39 runs at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium in Kigali on 19 September to win the ILT20 Continent Cup, ending the Cricket Cranes run of two straight titles.
Kenya batted first and reached 170 for seven from their twenty overs. They had been 103 for six when the recovery started, and Dhiren Gondaria made 44 before Brian Likavu finished unbeaten on 41 from 21 balls. Enock Kasaija took two for 34.
A captain’s fifty was not enough
Riazat Ali Shah made 53 from 33 balls and was the only Ugandan batsman to settle. Around him the innings folded for 131 in 17.5 overs. Sachin Gill took three for 17 and was named player of the match, and Lucas Oluoch took three for 44. Kenneth Waiswa, with 17, was the next highest scorer.
Twenty four hours after a 47 run win
Uganda had beaten the same opponents by 47 runs on the same ground on 18 September, to finish top of the round robin table. Gerald Olipa made 95 from 52 balls in that match, with six fours and eight sixes, as Uganda posted 197 for seven and bowled Kenya out for 150.
Both sides came out of the group stage on 14 points from eight matches, and Uganda took first place on net run rate.
The margin came from one passage of play. Kenya were six wickets down and short of a competitive score, and Brian Likavu and Francis Mutua added 33 for the seventh wicket before Likavu took the total to 170 for seven. Uganda never found an equivalent recovery, and after slipping to 25 for five they were bowled out for 131, 39 runs short.
What Uganda take out of Kigali
Finishing as runners up in a tournament they had won twice is a poor return on a campaign in which they lost once in eight round robin matches. A one off final measures something a league table does not.
Their next fixtures are six matches against Kenya in Nairobi from 5 to 13 October, and then the T20 World Cup Africa sub regional qualifier in Nigeria.
Where to bet: Cricket markets are priced in shillings by Fortebet and Betway, both licensed by the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board, covering match result, top batsman, total runs and outright winner, with deposits through MTN Mobile Money and Airtel Money. Associate cricket is thinly traded, so the two books can differ widely on the same match and the outright price tends to move late. Compare them before you stake. Our guide to the best betting sites in Uganda covers licensing and withdrawal times, and there is more in Uganda cricket news from AXN Sports. You must be 25 or older to bet in Uganda, where the Lotteries and Gaming Act sets the minimum age at 25 rather than 18. 25+. Gamble responsibly.
