Faisal Abubakari lost for the first time in twenty two professional fights when Slawa Spomer stopped him after six rounds in Ludwigshafen, and the vacant WBA Intercontinental super welterweight title went to the German.

The fight was at the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Ludwigshafen on Saturday 5 September. Abubakari went in with twenty one wins and no defeats, sixteen of them inside the distance, and came out at twenty one and one. Spomer moved to twenty two wins and one loss.

A record that looked better than the opposition

Twenty one and nought is a serious number and it is also the easiest number in boxing to misread. An unbeaten record says how many opponents a fighter has beaten, not how good they were. Spomer went into this one with a single defeat in twenty two, a vacant belt to win and a home crowd, and that is a different examination from the one that built the run.

Abubakari retired after the sixth round. Six rounds is not a hiding. It is the point at which a corner decides that the night is not going to turn.

What it costs and what it does not

An Intercontinental belt is not a world title. It is the rung below, the one that carries a rating and puts a boxer within reach of an eliminator, and it is the rung Ghanaian fighters have been climbing all year. Theophilus Kpakpo Allotey and Michael Abban both sit inside the WBO world ratings at junior bantamweight, and Allotey headlines at the Bukom Boxing Arena on Saturday 19 September.

One stoppage defeat abroad does not end a career. It does reset what the sanctioning bodies think a boxer is worth, and the next opponent gets chosen with that in mind. What Abubakari keeps is twenty one wins and the fact that he went to Germany for the belt rather than waiting for a safer night in Accra.

Where to bet: Ghanaian books price boxing on the headline bout, so expect fight winner, method of victory and round groups on Ghanaians fighting at home and abroad. Betway and Premier Bet, both licensed by the Gaming Commission of Ghana, price in cedis with deposits through MTN Mobile Money and Telecel Cash. Method markets are where an away fight is hardest to call, because a visiting boxer on a European card needs a wider margin than a home fighter does, and the two books rarely agree on how wide.
