FIBA has recognised Mustapha Abdullahi as president of the Nigeria Basketball Federation for the 2026 to 2030 term, in a letter from its secretary general Andreas Zagklis, while the vote that put him there is being challenged.
The letter congratulates Abdullahi and the newly elected board and follows the federation’s elective congress of 15 October. It also thanks the outgoing board led by Ahmadu Musa Kida.
The election is being challenged
Olumide Oyedeji, a candidate in the presidential ballot, has asked the NBBF Electoral Appeals Committee, chaired by Emmanuel Okibe, to nullify the elections and order a fresh exercise. He puts his case on his initial exclusion from the South West candidate list, on the expulsion of eight board members by the previous board, and on the accreditation of delegates. The appeal is pending.
A separate suit over the elective congress, brought by the former national team coach Ayodele Bakare, is before a Federal High Court in Abuja, which has fixed 3 November for hearing.
The board has been inaugurated
The National Sports Commission inaugurated the new board in Abuja on Thursday 15 October, together with the boards of the arm wrestling, fencing and padel federations.
