South Africa beat Eritrea by five goals to nil at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo on 30 September and lead Group D on six points from two matches in qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Relebohile Mofokeng scored twice, the first of them in the 19th minute. Sphephelo Sithole, Iqraam Rayners and Luther Singh scored the others, Singh four minutes into added time.
What Group D carries
CAF put 48 teams into 12 groups for the PAMOJA 2027 qualifiers. The teams ranked first and second in each group qualify directly for the finals, which are in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and take 24 teams. Groups D, H and L are the exception, because each of them contains one of the three host countries, and in those groups only the highest ranked team outside the host country qualifies.
Group D is South Africa, Guinea, Kenya and Eritrea, and Kenya are one of the hosts, so the single place goes to the highest ranked team other than Kenya. More from this market is on the South Africa sports news page.
The win over Guinea
South Africa beat Guinea by two goals to one at Orlando Stadium on 26 September. Ime Okon and Samukele Kabini scored for South Africa and Seydouba Cisse scored for Guinea. Pitso Mosimane is the South Africa coach, and the two wins have taken the side to six points.
