Gabriel Geay finished third at the BMW Berlin Marathon on 27 September in 2:03:59, behind Guye Adola and Gemechu Dida. Adola won in 2:02:50.
Gemechu Dida was second in 2:03:19. Nine runners went through halfway in 1:01:01. Adola moved to the front by 30 kilometres and had a nine second lead over Dida by 35 kilometres.
How the men’s field finished
Behind the podium came Getaneh Molla in 2:04:55 and Selemon Barega in 2:04:58. Asefa Boki was sixth in 2:05:32, Andamlak Belihu seventh in 2:05:55 and Shura Kitata eighth in 2:06:04. Yuhei Urano of Japan was ninth in 2:06:09.
Adola’s 2:02:50 is a personal best and it gives him a second Berlin Marathon title, after his win there in 2021. Geay had been the quickest entrant in the field after Sawe withdrew, which is where the elite list for this race put him.
Assefa takes the course record
Tigst Assefa won the women’s race in 2:11:04 and broke her own course record of 2:11:53, set in 2023. Bedatu Hirpa was second in 2:16:53 and Dera Dida third in 2:16:55, with Bekelech Gudeta fourth in 2:18:58 and Alemitu Tariku fifth in 2:19:01.
Geay ran 2:03:59 for Tanzania, with Adola and Dida of Ethiopia beside him on the podium.
